India C captain Ruturaj Gaikwad retired hurt after facing the second ball in the round 2 match of the Duleep Trophy 2024. India C and India B are facing each other on Day 1 of the Duleep Trophy match at the Rural Development Trust Stadium B in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. India B won the toss and opted to bowl first against India C. The India C captain, Gaikwad, faced just two balls , scoring a four in the first one. However, on the next ball, it was learnt that he twisted his ankle and had to retire hurt eventually.
It was a huge blow to the India C side, who won their first match against India D and gathered six points. However, India C recovered from the early blow with Sai Sudharsan scoring a 75-ball 43 and Rajat Patidar contributing with 40 runs from 67 balls. The duo shared a 92-run stand for 2nd wicket from 140 balls. After a great start, the two wickets fell in quick succession as Ishan Kishan and Baba Indrajith tried to rebuild the innings.

What happened to Gaikwad?
As per the reports, Gaikwad twisted his ankle while running off pacer Mukesh Kumar’s delivery and was sent back to the pavilion. However, the injury doesn’t seem to be very serious and he is expected to bat in the second inning. Gaikwad did not have the smoothest of starts in his red-ball cricket journey in recent months. The 27-year-old was named in India’s Test squad for the 2-match Test series against South Africa last December.
However, he was ruled out of the series due to an injury to his rung finger. The Chennai Super Kings batter has not been able to make a comeback to the Test side ever since. Gaikwad played 30 first-class games so far and managed 2092 runs with six hundreds and 10 fifties. Gaikwad’s first-class, List A and T20 debuts came in 2016-17 for Maharashtra.
