Concerns over bird flu in US: Is it safe to eat eggs? Here’s what experts say

With bird flu cases on the rise across the US, including a recent fatality in Louisiana, questions about egg safety have emerged among the people.

Experts agree that eggs in grocery stores are safe to eat as long as they are properly cooked.

Avian influenza (HPAI) is highly contagious among poultry, spreading through contact with infected birds, equipment or contaminated clothing and shoes.

However, experts believe the risk of eggs being contaminated and reaching consumers is actually very low.

According to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the likelihood of eggs from infected birds reaching retail markets is minimal.

A 2010 joint assessment by the FDA and USDA found that the risk of human infection from eggshells is low due to federal inspections and testing.

Anna Wald, MD, a specialist at the University of Washington, said that “properly cooked eggs are safe to eat,” but warned that raw milk could pose a risk, particularly after recent avian flu deaths linked to infected cows. Pasteurized milk remains safe, she added.

AOL quoted registered dietitian nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein as saying that cooking food thoroughly ensures safety. She recommended avoiding soft-boiled or runny eggs during the current bird flu outbreak. “I’d rather be cautious,” she explained.

The spread of bird flu and supply chain disruptions have led to higher egg prices in some areas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminded the public to cook poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165°F to kill harmful bacteria and viruses.

Although no cases of bird flu have been reported from properly cooked eggs in US, experts urge continued caution. Ensure that all poultry products, including eggs, are fully cooked before eating.
