US President-elect Donald Trump plans to sign 10 executive orders and directives related to matters ranging from energy to immigration, including declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, shortly after being sworn in as the 47th President of America on Monday, according to an incoming White House official.

The orders will fulfil key campaign promises, including initiating mass deportations and tightening border security.

Trump’s administration is also preparing over 200 additional directives and orders to roll out in the coming days, insiders revealed, according to news agency Reuters.

The planned actions signal an aggressive start to Trump’s presidency, prioritising rapid changes to longstanding policies.

Here are the 10 executive orders and directives.

IMMIGRATION

US President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to execute the largest deportation effort in American history, is preparing a series of sweeping executive orders to intensify the crackdown on illegal immigration.

According to an incoming administration official, Trump plans to declare a national emergency at the US-Mexico border to accelerate the construction of the border wall, a signature promise of his campaign. Additional troops will also be deployed to bolster border security efforts.

In a move expected to spark significant controversy, Trump intends to block all asylum claims at the southern border, effectively halting access for migrants seeking refuge in the United States.

END BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

Trump plans to issue an order aimed at ending birthright citizenship for children born in the US to parents who are not legally immigrated, according to the official.

The official referenced the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the US, saying, “The federal government will no longer recognise automatic citizenship for children of illegal immigrants born in the United States. We will also improve vetting and screening of illegal immigrants.”

Any effort by Trump to end birthright citizenship would likely face legal challenges, as it contradicts the 14th Amendment’s provisions.

ENERGY

On the energy front, President-elect Donald Trump plans to declare a national energy emergency to promote “affordable and reliable American energy”. This aligns with his campaign promise to “drill, baby, drill” and boost domestic energy production.

Trump will issue an executive order making energy development in Alaska a top priority, emphasising the state’s strategic importance to national security and its potential to become a key hub for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

Additionally, reports suggest Trump may withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement once again and take aim at policies supporting electric vehicles.

Proposed actions include imposing tariffs on global battery materials, rolling back environmental regulations, and revoking California’s stricter emissions standards.

TRADE AND TARIFFS

Trump’s trade agenda includes directing federal agencies to review trade relationships with China, Canada, and Mexico. While no immediate new tariffs are planned, the review could lead to significant changes.

Trump has proposed tariffs of 10% on global imports, 60% on Chinese goods, and 25% on Canadian and Mexican products, arguing these measures could spur US economic growth.

Critics, however, warn such moves might increase consumer costs.

TRANSGENDER RIGHTS

As part of a series of executive orders, Trump plans to issue an order defining only two genders strictly as male and female, effectively ending policies that recognise transgender identities in federal government practices.

Trump also intends to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military, being recognised in US schools, and participating in women’s sports, he said during a rally on Sunday.

DIVERSITY PROGRAMMES

Trump plans to issue an order to eliminate what he calls “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes in the federal government, according to an incoming White House official.

Trump, during his first term, signed an executive order to reduce efforts aimed at addressing racial disparities in workplaces, including diversity training programmes in companies.

However, the outgoing President Biden reversed that order on his first day in office in January 2021.

Now, Trump is expected to reinstate it early in his second term, possibly on his first day back in office.

PARDONS

Trump has announced plans to pardon individuals charged or convicted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. This move fulfils a campaign promise to address what he describes as political persecution.

Just before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th US President, former President Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons to several prominent critics of Trump, including members of Biden’s own family.

GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE

Trump intends to reverse Biden-era policies providing resources for gender-affirming care, including hormone therapy and surgery. The administration views these policies as harmful and unnecessary.

DRUG CARTELS

One of Trump’s early actions will involve classifying drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations. This step aims to address the opioid crisis, particularly the flow of fentanyl into the US, and aligns with Trump’s promise to crack down on drug sources.

FEDERAL WORKFORCE

Trump also plans to end widespread remote work for federal employees introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic. In December, Trump said that federal employees who refuse to return to the office would be dismissed.

Trump argues that returning to offices will reduce inefficiency and potentially lead to significant resignations, aiding efforts to downsize the federal bureaucracy.

By focusing on these sweeping changes across key policy areas, Trump’s administration aims to rapidly implement its agenda from Day One.
