Hours after US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance confronted Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office over his alleged lack of gratitude, the Ukrainian President publicly thanked all world leaders who expressed support following the tense showdown in Washington D.C. on Friday.

The meeting, which started with Trump saying that he would love to be remembered as the peacemaker in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, descended into a shouting bout with his Ukrainian counterpart. Shouting at Zelenskyy, Trump accused him of “gambling with millions of lives” in an extraordinary meeting.

The major flashpoint of the Ukraine-US talks occurred when Vance accused Zelenskyy of refusing to accept the present disagreements when it came to a ceasefire agreement and “fighting it out in front of the media.”

Chiming in, Trump said, “You have to be thankful. You don’t have the cards,” adding later, “You gotta be more thankful.”

“Have you said thank you once this entire meeting?” Vance asked.

Soon after the tense interactions got over, world leaders came out in support of Zelenskyy as Russia rejoiced the diplomatic fallout between its rival Ukraine and the US.

After being snubbed by both Vance and Trump for not being thankful enough, Zelenskyy went on a thanking spree as leaders from across Europe and Canada poured in their support.

While Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote, “You are not alone,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote, “Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine and Ukrainians in achieving a just and lasting peace.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who was in the US recently to meet Trump, talked about Britain’s “unwavering support” for Ukraine on X.

From Italy to Sweden to New Zealand, as leaders reached out to Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President went on to every message and wrote, “Thank you for your support.”

In fact, as Trump and Vance accused Zelenskyy of not being grateful for US support, a CNN fact-check team pointed out at least 33 times that the Ukrainian President thanked the US and the previous Joe Biden administration ever since the all-out war with Russia started in 2022.

Moments after Zelenskyy was targeted by Trump for not being sufficiently thankful, the Ukrainian President further took to X after the meeting ended and left behind a “Thank You America” note, reading: “Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”
