Southern Discom using FOMS tech to identify faulty feeders, take up restoration: CMD-OxBig News Network

The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) is implementing the feeder outage management system (FOMS) technology to quickly identify problems in 11 kV feeders and resolve supply issues timely, said Chairman and Managing Director of the power utility Md. Musharraf Faruqui.

Feeder faults and damaged areas in the feeder are automatically detected with the technology and to help locate the issue easily while GIS data alerts are sent to the respective assistant engineer with a buzzer sound in the SASA app. It enables electricity maintenance teams to reach the faulty location promptly and carry out restoration work.

In addition, the system allows real-time monitoring of the power supply in feeders, identifying causes of feeder shutdowns and the time taken for restoration at the CMD level.

As part of this initiative, the company is incorporating the FOMS technology into 8,621 – 3,412 in GHMC area, and 5,209 in rural areas – 11 kV feeders. So far, it has been implemented in 4,433 – 1,353 in GHMC area and 1,353 in rural areas – 11 kV feeders. Among the remaining feeders, about 2,000 feeders would integrated by the end of March and rest by the end of April, Mr. Faruqui stated.

Asking the engineers and other staff of the utility during the Yasangi/Rabi season to be more vigilant as loads would be at peak, he told the superintending engineers and chief engineers of all circles/zones in a video conference. He stated that the State is currently experiencing peak demand of around 17,000 megawatt.

The Southern Discom has been witnessing record peak loads exceeding 10,000 MW this season and it was highest-ever on March 4 at 10,533 MW, and on March 5, the Discom recorded highest-ever energy consumption of 215.52 million units. Last year, the highest peak load and consumption were 9,910 MW and 198.80 MU respectively, recorded on September 20 and 19.
