Video: Doctors deliver baby on Bangkok street amid massive earthquake – The Tribune

Doctors in Bangkok delivered a baby on the street outside the Police General Hospital after a massive earthquake struck Thailand.

According to the Thai Enquirer, the woman was undergoing surgery when the tremors hit on Friday, forcing medical teams to evacuate the hospital immediately.

Hospital staff carried the patient outside, where, surrounded by a team of doctors and nurses, she gave birth to a baby boy, said Police Colonel Sirikul Srisanga, the hospital’s spokesperson.

Videos circulating on social media captured the extraordinary scene, showing the woman lying on a stretcher as hospital staff assisted with the emergency delivery in the open air. The footage also revealed multiple stretchers lined up in the hospital’s courtyard, where doctors continued to provide treatment to other patients.

“While closing the abdominal wall, an earthquake occurred. The surgical team decided to stabilise the patient and evacuate them to a safer location,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Jiramrit.

“Upon reassessment, it was determined that the patient required immediate abdominal closure to prevent the risk of intestinal herniation and potential exposure of bowel loops to external air. Given the urgency, the surgical team proceeded with the final closure of the abdominal wall in a sterile environment outside the operating room, completing the procedure within 10 minutes,” he added.

Both the mother and newborn are now in stable condition and recovering in a hospital room.

The hospital did not have a specific earthquake response plan in place and instead followed Fire Evacuation Plan 3, which prioritises patient safety. Patients were relocated to three designated areas while civil engineers conducted structural integrity assessments of the hospital buildings.

The earthquake that shook Bangkok originated from Myanmar, where two powerful tremors—measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude—struck at around 12:50 pm local time on Friday. The impact was felt across several areas in Thailand, causing buildings to sway and swimming pools to overflow.

The death toll in Myanmar has surged to over 1,000 as rescue teams recover more bodies from the rubble of collapsed buildings near the country’s second-largest city.
