Russell Brand responds to rape allegations: ‘I was a drug addict, a s*x addict, and an imbecile but what I never was a rapist’

British comedian and actor Russell Brand has strongly denied a series of serious allegations, including rape, indecent assault, and sexual offences involving four women. In response to the charges, which span from 1999 to 2005, Brand has maintained his innocence and spoken out against what he describes as a misuse of power by the government.

In a public statement, Brand emphatically rejected the accusations, stating, “I’ve never been a rapist.” He further criticised authorities, claiming the legal system has been manipulated into “a weapon” against him. Brand insists that all his past relationships were consensual.
Following the charges, he took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to post a video with the caption, “My response.” In the video, he addressed his past behaviour, saying, “I’ve always told you guys, when I was young and single, before I had my wife and family, I was a fool, man. I was a drug addict, I was a sex addict and an imbecile.” He admitted to struggling with addiction and reckless behaviour but firmly stated, “What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity—I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”

Brand also used the opportunity to criticise the UK government and legal system, alleging corruption. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the charges relate to incidents involving four women over a six-year period.

The allegations include an alleged rape in Bournemouth in 1999, oral rape and sexual assault in Westminster in 2004, and additional assaults in 2001 and 2005, also in Westminster. These charges were first reported by The US Sun. Brand is set to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2.
