Trump lawsuit fallout? Bill Owens resigns from ’60 Minutes’ citing editorial interference

Bill Owens, the longtime executive producer of CBS’s iconic news program 60 Minutes, resigned on Tuesday. In a note to staff, Owens said he could no longer operate the show as he once did — especially when it came to making decisions independently and in the best interest of the audience.

In his memo, Owens expressed disappointment, stating, “I am stepping aside so the show can move forward.” He emphasized that he had spent years defending the program’s journalistic values, but it had become clear that continuing in his role would prevent him from making the right decisions without interference.

According to Associated Press, Owens’ exit occurs at a heightened state of tension for 60 Minutes. President Donald Trump has sued CBS for $20 billion after accusing the show of selectively editing an interview with Kamala Harris last fall. The lawsuit has caused a rift in CBS leadership, as there are ongoing discussions on whether to settle the issue or battle the case.

Owens and the others at 60 Minutes strongly opposed settling with Trump, knowing it would discredit the show. The pressure brought by the suit and CBS corporate management might have been a decisive factor in Owens’ resignation.
