Kerala steps up security amid India-Pakistan tensions-OxBig News Network

In the light of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, security has been beefed up around vital installations in Kerala, including airports, the Vizhinjam international seaport, recently commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, railway stations, naval and air bases in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and other main institutions such as the shipyard and LNG terminal in Kochi, among other places.

According to sources in the Vizhinjam seaport, the authorities have decided not to entertain any visits, including personal and business purpose visits, to the port until a new instruction from the Centre. In addition, security cover at the port has been increased. The port is situated hardly 10 nautical miles away from the international shipping route.

At the Thiruvananthapuram airport, heightened security is already in place, and passengers have been advised to check the status of flights before arriving at the airport.

Flight delays, cancellations likely

Since many airlines have cancelled some services and grounded aircraft in some regions, flight delays or cancellations are likely, said sources.

As of now, the operations have been smooth, and no cancellations have been reported, said airport sources.

Defence sources also said the public will have to experience enhanced security measures at major places in the light of the Central instruction.

The Navy has also heightened vigil along the coast of Kerala, especially in Kochi.

A security alert has been issued for major dams, including both power generation and irrigation dams, across the State. Police deployment has been increased in these places.
