India captain Shubman Gill rose to the occasion on his first outing as Test captain as he brought up a brisk half-century on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Batting at number four, a place held by Virat Kohli since the retirement of legendary Sachin Tendulkar in 2013, Gill led his team from the front as he scored a 56-ball half-century with the help of eight boundaries.
As a result, he became the ninth Indian captain to achieve the feat in his first innings and also the youngest ever to do so at the age of 25. Gill walked in to bat with India on 92/2 as England dismissed KL Rahul (42) and debutant Sai Sudharsan at the stroke of lunch.
