A 19-year-old woman ended her life at her residence in KPHB Colony, allegedly following sustained harassment over dowry demands. The KPHB Police have registered a case of dowry death and launched an investigation.
The deceased, identified as Maloth Poojitha, was married to Jatoth Srinu, a sales executive at a jewellery store. The couple tied the knot on April 16, 2025. According to a complaint lodged by Poojitha’s grandmother, Maloth Bhadaramma, the family had spent ₹11 lakh on the wedding, including eight tolas of gold and household articles.
The complainant alleged that after her marriage, during Poojitha’s stay at her in-laws’ residence, her mother-in-law, J. Achamma and father-in-law Pool Singh, soon began demanding an additional ₹10 lakh in dowry. Poojitha was allegedly harassed by her brother-in-law Veeranna, sister-in-law, Lalitha, and Veeranna’s wife Jyothi, who taunted her for bringing “less dowry”.
The complainant, a 65-year-old farmer from Khammam, stated that after Poojitha confided in her about the abuse, she pleaded with the in-laws to stop harassing her granddaughter and assured them the ₹10 lakh would be arranged after the upcoming crop season.
The couple then moved to their KPHB residence earlier this month. The complainant also alleged that a man named Hari sent Srinu photos of Poojitha drinking a soft drink with her brothers, which he then used to taunt and harass her further. On June 21, Srinu informed Poojitha’s family that he returned home from work only to find Poojitha dead. Further investigation is underway.
