Two women from Patna, Bihar drowned in Sarpanpally Lake near Wilderness Resort in Vikarabad on Saturday afternoon after their boat capsized during a sudden spell of rain and strong winds.
The women have been identified as Ritha Kumari, 53, and Punam Singh, both residents of Patna, said an officer from the Vikarabad police.
The incident occurred around 4.30 p.m. when the two women, accompanied by their granddaughters, Inshika, aged 3.5 years, and Ivanshi, aged 1.5 years, went boating along with a boat operator. “The families had arrived at the resort earlier in the day from Hyderabad and were reportedly having tea before heading to the lake,” said the officer.
Shortly after the boat entered the water, weather conditions deteriorated with rain and strong winds. “The boat overturned, throwing all occupants into the lake. Family members rushed to help and managed to rescue the two young girls. However, both Ritha Kumari and Punam Singh lost consciousness in the water and could not be revived,” added the officer.
A relative, Alok Kumar, who attempted to rescue the victims, was injured and admitted to a private in Vikarabad. Doctors have confirmed that he is out of danger.
