Dragon spacecraft successfully splashed down into Pacific Ocean off the coast of California moments ago thereby completing the Axiom 4 mission and placing India firmly on the world’s space map.
“India has found an enduring space in the world of space,” Science Minister Jitendra Singh said as Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla touched down.
Prime minister Narendra Modi on X said, “I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to Space. As India’s first astronaut to have visited the International Space Station, he has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage and pioneering spirit. It marks another milestone towards our own Human Space Flight Mission — Gaganyaan.”
Singh, who had organised a special live screening of the historic occasion at Anusandhan Bhavan in Delhi, said that Shukla will go through mandatory post-flight rehabilitation before returning to India by August 17.
“Shubhanshu Shukla has articulated the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam by performing rare experiments never done before, but ones that will have a lasting beneficial impact on humankind,” the Minister said.
Singh said that Shukla will now enter quarantine till July 23 to acclimatise with gravity.
“July 24 onwards team discussions with experts from ISRO will be held over four days. Then a debriefing of astronauts will be held with representatives of Axiom Space, Space X and NASA. This will go on till August 13 and we expect Shubhanshu to return to India by August 17,” Singh said.
Today, Shukla and colleagues will reach Houston from San Diego by 11 PM (IST) from where they will proceed for post-flight rehabilitation.
