Data shared by the MEA in Parliament earlier showed that the US had deported 6,135 Indian nationals during Trump’s first term (2017-2021). The highest number of deportations occurred in 2019, with 2,042 Indians sent back. The figures for the other years were 1,024 in 2017, 1,180 in 2018 and 1,889 in 2020.

During Joe Biden’s presidency (2021–2025), the number of Indian nationals deported dropped to around 3,000.

The Trump administration had launched a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigrants during its first term.
