In fact, many media posts alleged that Anjali Birla is a model by profession and she cleared the UPSC exam in the first attempt because of her father’s ‘powerful position’. However, Anjali Birla rejected these claims and said that these social media handles are being operated to defame her father.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (July 23, 2024) directed Google and X (formerly Twitter) to remove social media posts made about Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s daughter. In these posts, Om Birla’s daughter Anjali Birla was accused of passing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam in her first attempt due to her father’s influence.
Justice Naveen Chawla in his interim order has directed X (Twitter) and Google to remove these posts within 24 hours. The court barred unknown persons from making defamatory allegations against Birla. The court said that prima facie Birla is able to prove that the posts in question are defamatory.
According to the Bar and Bench report, senior advocate Rajiv Nair appeared on behalf of Birla. Nair argued that a similar allegation had surfaced earlier in the year 2021. She said the controversy had died down after news publications fact-checked Birla and revealed her to be an IRPS officer.
“I became an officer in 2021 but now suddenly these things have come to the fore again because of the NEET and UPSC exam controversy. It (social media posts) makes it seem like we are all part of it… My personal photos are being posted online and it is being said that I am a model,” Nair told the court on behalf of Anjali Birla.
In fact, many media posts alleged that Anjali Birla is a model by profession and due to her father’s ‘powerful position’, she passed the UPSC exam in the first attempt. However, Anjali Birla rejected these claims and said that these social media handles are being operated to defame her father.
Anjali Birla approached the Delhi High Court against these social media. In her petition, Anjali Birla made X (Twitter), Google and unknown people parties and demanded the removal of their posts. She gave details of 16 X accounts against which relief was sought. These also include a parody account of YouTuber Dhruv Rathi.
Contrary to the claims made in the social media posts, Anjali Birla is not an IAS but an IRPS officer. She appeared in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination in the year 2019. After this she joined the commission in April 2021. She has completed her mandatory training last year.(opindia)
