Senior leader of the AIADMK’s ally Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) Nellai Mubarak called on DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the party head office in Chennai on Friday (April 11, 2025) and thanked him for the steps being taken by the Tamil Nadu government against the Union government’s Waqf (Amendment) Act. The meeting has set off speculations as to whether the SDPI would continue in the AIADMK-led alliance.

Responding to a query about his party’s position should the AIADMK form an electoral alliance with the BJP, Mr. Mubarak, who is SDPI’s State unit president, said: “As of now, we are here only to thank the Chief Minister. We will inform reporters after considering the political situation in Tamil Nadu.”

During his interaction with reporters after the meeting, he said the Waqf (Amendment) Act was against the Constitution, secularism, and minorities. The SDPI has been staging protests in various parts of the country against the Act, he said. “The entire State should oppose the legislation. All democratic forces should unite against this.”

“The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister moved a resolution against the legislation in the Assembly. The DMK MPs voted against the legislation in the Parliament. Except for the BJP, all other parties supported the resolution moved by the CM in the Assembly,” Mr. Mubarak recalled. His party met the CM to thank him for the steps being undertaken against the Waqf legislation.

Responding to a query about developments in the BJP, Mr. Mubarak said he was not aware of them so far. He went on to hail the Supreme Court judgment against Tamil Nadu Governor and termed it “historic”. He stressed his party met the CM to thank him over these two issues.
