Autorickshaws have now been permitted to enter the Tiruchi airport premises to drop passengers, a move that was not allowed earlier, said Tiruchi Lok Sabha member Durai Vaiko. He announced that an express courier service is expected to begin within three weeks.
In a statement, Mr. Durai said most users of the airport are from working class and middle-income backgrounds and often rely on autorickshaws for affordable last-mile connectivity. Allowing autorickshaws into the premises, he said, would improve access for passengers and support the livelihoods of autorickshaw drivers.
The MP said the development follows sustained efforts and proposals he submitted earlier in his capacity as Chairman of the Airport Advisory Committee, including requests for autorickshaw access, courier services, and infrastructure for media.
All three proposals had been implemented following his recent meeting with new Airport Director S. Gnaneswara Rao. Mr. Durai added that additional domestic routes to Hyderabad and Delhi could follow the recent launches of services to Chennai and Mumbai.
