Bangladesh government’s adviser Nahid Islam resigns, likely to lead new political party

Bangladesh’s interim government adviser and key student leader of the August uprising, Nahid Islam, has resigned from Muhammad Yunus government.

Islam met Yunus at his office earlier this afternoon and handed over his resignation letter. Nahid was inducted into the Muhammad Yunus government last year as an adviser to the Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry.

“Under the present circumstances, in the interest of the nation and its people, I should be standing by the student population in the country. Therefore, I think I must tender my resignation,” Islam wrote in his letter to Yunus.

This move comes amid talks that Bangladeshi students, who were at the forefront of last year’s protests that ousted then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are set to launch a political party this week, according to a report by news agency Reuters.

The student group is finalising plans to launch the new party and open a new tab during an event likely on Wednesday, the report mentioned.

Islam is expected to lead the party as convener. Islam has been a key figure in advocating for student interests within the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Yunus had earlier said that elections could be held by the end of 2025.
