Global EV big Tesla just isn’t occupied with manufacturing cars in India however eager on establishing showrooms within the nation, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy stated on Monday (June 2, 2025).

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that if Tesla have been to construct a manufacturing unit in India to avoid that nation’s tariffs, it would be “unfair” to the U.S.

“Tesla… They are extra () solely to start out showrooms. They should not to (begin) manufacturing in India,” Mr. Kumaraswamy advised reporters right here.

The Minister made the remarks at a press convention to announce the revealing of tips for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Cars in India.

“So far they (Tesla) haven’t proven curiosity. A Tesla consultant solely participated within the first spherical of stakeholder discussions for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Cars in India. The firm’s consultant was not a part of the second and third spherical of the stakeholder deliberations,” an official advised PTI.

Tesla CEO billionaire Elon Musk had stated in April 2024 that his visit to India had been delayed because of the firm’s heavy obligations.

Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen-Skoda, Hyundai, Kia

Mr. Kumaraswamy added that international car makers resembling Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia had proven curiosity in manufacturing electrical vehicles in India.

The stated firms have expressed curiosity through the stakeholder discussions between the federal government and the business concerning the ‘Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India’, the detailed tips for which have been unveiled by the minister.

While the scheme was notified on March 15 final 12 months, its tips have been issued on Monday.

Officials stated the window to use below the scheme will open in a few weeks, and it stays to be seen which firms would really go forward and apply.

Approved candidates can be required to make a minimal funding of ₹4,150 crore in keeping with the provisions of the scheme.
