Walmart CEO Doug McMillon on India: Rare to see such a large economy growing so fast-OxBig News Network

Walmart global CEO and president Doug McMillon on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) reiterated the company’s aim to source $10 billion a year from India, adding that it was rare to see a big economy like India growing as fast as it is. He further said that the company was learning a lot from its Indian acquisitions, Flipkart and PhonePe. 

Speaking at an event in New Delhi to showcase Walmart’s businesses in India, Mr. McMillon said that while a single trip can give a snapshot of what’s happening in India, he has taken repeated trips and can see how the India story is unfolding, broadening and “becoming much more interesting”.

“At the beginning, we were sourcing products here,” he said. “There were limited categories, but we were excited to get started. Look at what’s happened in our sourcing business. It’s grown a lot and now we have this goal of getting to $10 billion a year, which is a really big number and together with the supplier community, we’re working to achieve that.”

He added that Walmart has a long-term view of India. 

“If you could see that from the many years that we’ve been here and you could expect that to continue, we see the growth in India,” Mr. McMillon said. “We see entrepreneurship happening here. And we get to do business all over the world and it’s rare to have such a big economy growing so fast and creating so much opportunity for so many.”

Speaking about Walmart’s past acquisitions in India, Flipkart and PhonePe, Mr. McMillon said that the growth of the two businesses has been “inspiring”. 

“We’re really learning a lot from those businesses,” he said. “The ability to innovate, the ability to move with speed, the ability to serve more and more customers, to develop sellers, to build an e-commerce marketplace business that has just a really bright future and the chance to create a lot of opportunity for everyone.”
