Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey has cast Matt Damon in the lead role of Odysseus. The first look at the film was revealed through its official X account, featuring a photo of Damon in character alongside the announcement.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows Odysseus’ long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Universal, the film’s distributor, has described it as a “mythic action epic” that will be shot worldwide using new IMAX film technology. This marks the first time Homer’s story will be adapted for IMAX screens.
The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay, will produce alongside his longtime collaborator and wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner.

Production is set to begin in spring, with filming scheduled in various locations, including Sicily’s Favignana Island, believed to be one of the inspirations for Odysseus’ travels in the original text.
This marks the third collaboration between Nolan and Damon, who previously worked together on Interstellar and Oppenheimer. With its high-profile cast and large-scale production, The Odyssey is set to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026.
