In a shocking incident in the Sitto Gunno village of Abohar, Punjab, a 35-year-old farmer named Bharat Ratan was brutally murdered over an old rivalry. The incident has sparked outrage in the region, with the victim’s family refusing to conduct the post-mortem until the accused are arrested. Even the deceased’s 7-year-old daughter joined the family protest.
The Incident
According to reports, the murder took place on Friday afternoon when Bharat Ratan was on his way to Bishanpura village. He was intercepted by a group of men who attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, leaving him critically injured.
Initially, he was taken to a local hospital, where doctors referred him to Faridkot. However, the family chose to take him to Sri Ganganagar instead. From there, he was referred to Bathinda later that night. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries en route to Bathinda, near Sadulshahar.
Family’s Protest
The victim’s body was placed in the hospital mortuary, but the family members staged a sit-in outside the facility throughout the night. They have refused to allow the post-mortem until the accused are arrested. Even the victim’s young daughter participated in the protest.
The family has warned that if no arrests are made by noon, they will stage a protest with the body at Sitto Chowk.
Police Investigation
Station House Officer (SHO) Davinder Singh of Bahawwala Police Station confirmed that the police had received the incident report and an officer was dispatched to the hospital. However, by the time they arrived, the victim had already been referred to another hospital. On Saturday, the news of Bharat Ratan’s death was confirmed, and the police launched a formal investigation.
Based on the family’s statements, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against 10 individuals — four of whom are named: Yatin Godara, his mother Meenakshi, Sudhir, and Vikram alias Paua, all residents of Sitto Gunno. The remaining accused are currently unidentified.
Background of Rivalry
According to the police, there had been prior disputes and altercations between the victim and the accused. These ongoing tensions are believed to have escalated into this fatal attack.
Community Demands Justice
The brutal killing has stirred unrest in the local community. Villagers are demanding swift action and justice for the victim’s family. They are also calling for increased police presence and safety measures in the area to prevent such incidents in the future.
