Rupnagar: In a shocking case from Punjab, a court has sentenced a man to 70 years in jail. In fact, a 28-year-old man was accused of three murders and an attempt to murder. The District and Sessions Court of Rupnagar (Ropar) has sentenced the convict to three life imprisonments in a case of triple murder. The court has also sentenced him to 10 years in jail for attempted murder. The convict will have to spend a total of 70 years in jail as the court has ordered that all the sentences will run one after the other.
It is worth noting that the court did not give relief to the convict and ordered that the period spent in jail during investigation or court hearing will not be deducted from the jail term. The court of Rupnagar Sessions Judge Ramesh Kumari convicted Alam, a resident of Morinda city, on July 20. On the midnight of 3 and 4 June 2020, Alam killed his wife Kajal, sister-in-law Jaspreet Kaur and nephew Sahil with an axe.
The court ordered that Alam will have to serve life imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 10,000 for the murder of his wife Kajal. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve two years in jail. The court ordered that Alam will also have to serve life imprisonment for the murder of Jaspreet Kaur and her nephew Sahil. The court also sentenced him to 10 years in jail for attempting to murder Alam’s other nephew Bobby, who survived that night.
The court “calculated the fractions of the period up to sixty years, that is, twenty years in three cases of Section 302 IPC followed by ten years under Section 307 IPC, totalling seventy years”. The court ordered that the convict will not be entitled to the benefit of Section 428 of the CrPC, which means that the period of detention already undergone by the convict during investigation/trial will not be set off against his period of imprisonment.(news18)
