In a pioneering initiative, the Chamarajanagar district administration has opened dedicated diabetes clinics at all public hospitals, community health centres, and primary health centres in the district.
The clinics will operate from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on all Wednesdays, providing specialised healthcare services to diabetic patients. The official launch of the initiative, which is reckoned to be the first of its kind in the State, was held at Venkatayyanachatra primary health centre in Chamarajanagar taluk on Wednesday.
Shilpa Nag, Deputy Commissioner of Chamarajanagar, who inaugurated the programme, said the diabetes clinics focus on diabetic care and management, and it will greatly benefit rural and underprivileged communities.
At the diabetes clinics, patients will receive medical check-ups, medication, diabetic charts, dietary guidelines, and other essential healthcare services. “If advanced medical treatment is required, patients will be referred to other medical centres as per the protocol,” a statement issued by the district administration noted.
Ms. Nag appreciated the efforts of the District Health and Family Welfare officer and his team for successfully introducing the service. The department will depute nodal officers for the management of the diabetes clinics.
Even though most health centres open at 9 a.m., forcing diabetes patients to wait for their check-ups, a special laboratory service will now be available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Wednesday exclusively for diabetes-related blood tests.
District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. S. Chidambara said, “All necessary measures had been taken to ensure proper implementation of the diabetes clinics across the district.”
The statement noted that Chamarajanagar has set an example for other districts to follow in providing accessible and specialised healthcare services for diabetic patients.
