NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday called for harmonious Holi celebrations in line with Sanatan Dharma’s age-old traditions, urging people to respect each other’s choices and avoid forcibly applying colors.
Speaking at the Bhakt Prahlad Shobha Yatra in Pandeyhata, CM Adityanath said that Holika Dahan should symbolise the burning of ego and negativity, news agency PTI reported.
The UP CM said that festivals bring greater joy when celebrated with mutual respect and urged people not to forcibly apply colours on others, especially those who are unwell.
“People should celebrate Holi in harmony, following the centuries-old traditions of Sanatan Dharma. Festivals bring greater joy when celebrated with mutual respect,” he said.
His remarks come amid sensitivities around Holi coinciding with Friday prayers, particularly in Sambhal, where local Muslims have rescheduled Jumma Namaz to 2.30 pm to avoid any communal tensions. The city has been on edge since the November 24 riots following a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid.
The CM said that festivals are best celebrated with mutual respect and unity. He also praised the recently concluded Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, calling it a testament to Sanatan Dharma’s global influence.
“Over 66 crore devotees from across India and over 100 countries participated in the Maha Kumbh, including diplomats, ministers, religious leaders, and dignitaries. It showcased unparalleled discipline, unity, and goodwill,” he said.
Drawing a connection between Kumbh Mela’s spiritual unity and Holi’s message of togetherness, the CM urged people to revive traditional Holi songs, stressing the importance of folk culture.
“By next year, community groups should be formed in localities to promote Holi songs and preserve our cultural heritage,” he added.
