The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has prolonged the deadline for submitting revenue tax returns (ITRs) for the monetary yr 2024-25 to September 15 from the sooner deadline of July 31, 2025, citing the quite a few modifications that the types have undertaken and the time taken to replace the methods. 

“The notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting,” the CBDT stated in a launch on Tuesday (May 27, 2025). “These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities.”

The announcement comes following important outrage on social media among the many chartered accountant group, who complained that the federal government had not but launched the software program utilities to allow the submitting of the ITRs. 

“In view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of Income Tax Return utilities for Assessment Year 2025-26 (financial year 2024-25), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the due date for filing returns,” the official launch added. 

The authentic due date of July 31, 2025, has been prolonged to September 15, 2025, it added, saying a proper notification on this is able to be launched shortly.
