L2: Empuraan Movie Review
Theatre occupancy
The film’s steady performance shows its strong appeal among audiences, particularly in Kerala, where it has recorded the highest occupancy rates. On Sunday, the Malayalam version achieved an overall occupancy of 75.26%, with afternoon and evening shows drawing the largest crowds. Meanwhile, the Telugu version saw moderate traction at 17.22%, followed by Tamil at 25.20% and Hindi at a subdued 10%.
Globally, ‘L2: Empuraan’ has crossed the Rs 100-crore mark within its first two days, making it one of the biggest Malayalam releases of all time. While the film has performed exceptionally well in Kerala and overseas markets, its pan-Indian reach remains limited due to lower occupancy in non-Malayalam regions.
Controversy and re-edits
The film has faced criticism for its depiction of communal violence, which some believe resembles the Gujarat riots of 2002. This backlash has led to calls for edits, with the production team announcing 17 cuts to tone down sensitive content. Changes include altering the antagonist’s name and muting certain dialogues. Despite these challenges, the controversy appears to have fueled curiosity, driving more audiences to theaters.
‘L2: Empuraan’ is the second installment in the ‘Lucifer’ franchise and features an ensemble cast including Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, and Sachin Khedekar.
