Artist Jarnail Singh, who painted the cultural landscape of Punjab, breathed his last on Monday morning at a hospital in Chandigarh. Son of Sikh history painter Sardar Kirpal Singh, Jarnail Singh’s demise left city art lovers at a loss of words. “Gone too early,” said artist Diwan Manna. He was reportedly 69.
Based in Canada, Jarnail Singh kept his bond with Chandigarh alive. He painted Punjabi women on charkha, doing Phulkari, and was majorly associated with the reproduction of his father’s works on Sikh history. Born in Zira, district Ferozepur, Jarnail Singh was active in Chandigarh art scene and was part of Punjab Art Council as well. Apart from painting, he had keen interest in literature and contributed for various magazines.
