Atlee’s bold reply ‘we shouldn’t judge by appearance’ to Kapil Sharma’s twisted question creates social media frenzy | Hindi Movie News

Filmmaker Atlee is gearing up for the release of his latest production venture, ‘Baby John’, starring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. The film is an official adaptation of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil film ‘Theri’, starring Thalapathy Vijay.
In a recent conversation with Kapil Sharma on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Atlee had a sharp reply to the host’s twisted question about his physical appearance. Actors Varun, Keerthy, and Wamiqa were also present with Atlee during the show, and the particular question Kapil asked the filmmaker has now sparked a social media frenzy, with some finding it tinged with racism.

In the clip, Kapil asked Atlee whether the leading stars used to be confused when seeing him in person, even though he is a prominent filmmaker and producer. Atlee, with respect, answered the question, “In a way, I understood your question, I’ll try to answer it. I am very thankful to AR Murugadoss because he produced my first film. He didn’t see how I looked, whether I was capable or not, but he loved my narration. I think the world should see that. We shouldn’t judge by appearance; we should judge by the heart.” His answer received a huge round of applause from the audience and netizens alike.

As soon as the video was shared on Reddit, many criticised Kapil for his remarks and supported Atlee for his sharp reply. One social media user wrote, “That was so rude… He handled it perfectly. Because colourism is so normalised in South Asia, disrespecting someone for their skin colour is often seen as funny or deserved.” Another reacted, “Kudos to Atlee for giving it back and making it sound wrong from Kapil’s end.”

However, there were some who believed that Kapil’s question was not intended to harm Atlee’s appearance. “Kapil clearly says ‘you are so young but a big director already.’ It was directed at that, not his looks. He wasn’t talking about the man’s body complexion; he was joking about how you don’t look like… a director stereotype… Only pseudo-liberals are making a thing out of nothing,” another commented. “He said nothing about colour or appearance.”
‘Baby John’ will hit theatres on December 25, coinciding with Christmas.
