Bollywood meets anime: From Bhool Bhulaiya to Jab We Met, here are your favourite movies reimagined as Studio Ghibli art-OxBig News Network

If you’ve been scrolling through your feed lately and thought, “Wait, why do I keep seeing Rajpal Yadav from Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) as a Studio Ghibli character?” — you’re not alone. Here’s why: Sam Altman’s ChatGPT now has a new update where users can generate Ghibli-inspired visuals of absolutely anything from a simple prompt, including Bollywood’s most iconic scenes. The feature began rolling out to ChatGPT’s free, Plus, and Pro users earlier this week, and the internet quickly started experimenting. Bollywood classics like Sholay (1975), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Hera Pheri (2000) and Baahubali (2015) have all been given an animated makeover, and the internet can’t stop talking about it.

Bollywood meets anime

One of the most viral posts comes from Vivek Choudhary, who posted these AI-generated images of Bollywood scenes on X. The famous Hera Pheri trio — Raju, Baburao, and Shyam — is reimagined as adorable, Totoro-style characters, or the epic battle of Baahubali unfolds in a stunning, dreamlike landscape that could easily belong to the mystical land of Spirited Away. The fan-favourite DDLJ train scene? It’s now full of magic that even Raj and Simran would approve of!

However, not everyone is on board with AI-generated art, especially when it comes to replicating the work of talented human animators. Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is known for his strong stance against artificial art.

Miyazaki’s concern

While AI-generated art is becoming more mainstream, there’s the artist’s perspective to consider. Miyazaki, who co-founded Studio Ghibli and has produced some of the most revered animated films in history, has made it clear that he’s not a fan of AI encroaching on the world of animation. A resurfaced clip from his 2016 documentary, NHK Special: Hayao Miyazaki — The One Who Never Ends, shows Miyazaki expressing his strong opposition to technology replacing human creativity in art.

In the clip, Miyazaki can be seen addressing students who proposed using machines to create animation. “I am utterly disgusted,” he says, clearly unhappy with the idea. “If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel this is an insult to life itself.” He further said, “I feel like we are nearing the end of our times. We humans are losing faith in ourselves.”

As AI continues to evolve, the possibilities for merging traditional animation and modern technology are limitless. Will we see more Bollywood films reimagined in Ghibli style? It’s certainly possible, and fans are here for it. The fun doesn’t have to stop at Bollywood either; who knows what other movie universes might get a Ghibli-style makeover next?
