Renowned producer Ektaa R Kapoor recently took to social media to express her strong opinions on the state of the Indian entertainment industry. In a series of posts, she addressed the criticism Indian content faces compared to international productions, the audience’s role in film failures, and the corporate-driven nature of the industry.

Kapoor began by questioning Indian creators who claim that Indian content isn’t on par with globally acclaimed films and TV series. “When Indian creators cry that Indian content is not at par with internationally acclaimed TV series n films… I wonder if it’s ego, anger, or just misplaced accusations.”

In another post, she discussed the underwhelming theatrical performance of films like Superboys of Malegaon and The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta. Kapoor sarcastically pointed out how blaming the audience is ineffective, saying, “Can we blame the real culprits, the ‘audiences’?” She further noted, “Since it’s no fun blaming people in such abstract terms (can’t bring them down on social media, na, so no fun), let’s just say the major part of India is in its evolutionary stage as far as content is concerned. You can say it’s in its adolescence.”

Her most striking statement came in her critique of corporate studios and streaming platforms. Kapoor passionately urged creators to “fight the system,” accusing industry giants of prioritizing numbers over creativity. “Terrible of us studios and all the apps to treat entertainment like an industry! Movie-making and content creation is not a business. It’s an art,” she wrote. Kapoor even called for creators to fund their own projects, saying, “I urge creators to put their own money. Problem solved!”

While Kapoor did not directly reference any individuals, her comments come in the wake of filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s recent criticisms of the Hindi film industry. Kashyap expressed his disillusionment with Bollywood’s focus on massive box office returns, stating that “everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore film.” He lamented that this obsession has led to a toxic environment, causing him to relocate to South India in search of a more creatively stimulating atmosphere.
