‘Gandi filmein hi banti hain, including my own’: Salman Khan’s blunt reasoning for Bollywood films flopping | Bollywood-OxBig News Network

Trust Salman Khan to be completely candid in front of the media and say things that even seasoned journalists were not expecting. In an era when film journalists have become accustomed to rehearsed and polished responses from stars, Salman is still a throwback to the ‘good old’ days of candid responses. On Wednesday, the actor met media for promotions of his upcoming film Sikandar and true to his self, dropped some truth bombs there. Salman Khan on his films failing at the box office

When the actor was asked to comment on Bollywood’s ‘dull phase’ at the box office, he responded, “Jab itni gandi pictures banengi to flop to hongi hi. Jab banti hi gandi films hain (When bad films are made, they film. All the films being made are bad), including my own. If it doesn’t work, it’s a bad film, it works, it’s a very good film.” Salman saw his first major flop in years in 2023, when his film, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, failed to recover its investment.

Salman also took the onus of the film’s failure, saying the star is responsible for getting the audience to the theatre. “The star is the one who is seen on the poster, in the theatre. The blame would be on him too if the films don’t work,” he said.

Salman reveals what ails Bollywood

The actor touched upon what he felt was going wrong with the writing in the industry and why quality work was not being done as much in Hindi cinema. “They are writing for themselves right now. They are competing with directors. Producers are competing with other producers. Everyone wants to show the other person how a movie is made. No, you have got to make a film for the audience. You have to write it in such a way that you are sitting in the front row and enjoying it. Don’t think ‘inko samajh nahi aayega (the audience won’t get it)’. How can you say that. Then you start spoonfeeding the audience. But the audience has gone way ahead. With the OTT platforms coming in, the audience has access to any film and all types of cinema from anywhere,” he added.

The 59-year-old urged filmmakers to make the films for ‘the right reason’, which, he said is not happening these days. “Our directors and producers are making films for the wrong reasons. My father told me this the other day. Because today films are made when they have actors’ dates, or the heroine is getting married, or they have funding. A film should only be made once you have the best script ever. Nothing else,” said Salman.

However, the actor ended the discussion on a rather hopeful note. “Movies, whether good or bad, are still the most-watched form of entertainment in the country,” he said, “Sure, people can go out to a nightclub but how many people do that. Most sit at home and watch films.” The actor said he was hopeful that the tide would turn for Hindi cinema in the days and weeks to come.
