Ever since director Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, headlined by Prabhas, enthralled film viewers during its phenomenal run in 2024, the hype for the sequel has been sky-high. Now, in a welcome surprise to fans, Ashwin has revealed that the film will go on floors in December this year.

In a recent media interaction, at the 10th-anniversary celebration of his debut Yevade Subramanyam, Ashwin confirmed that preparations for the much-awaited second part of Kalki are underway and that the film will begin shooting in December 2025.

Further, in an update that has thrilled fans of Prabhas, the director also said that the second part of the franchise will show more of Prabhas (the first film focused more on the arcs of Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan’s characters). “The second part will have more of Prabhas, as it will be majorly centred around the Karna and Ashwatthama characters,” said Ashwin.

In an earlier interview with us, Ashwin had said that the second film will explore a lot more of the film’s antagonist, Kamal Haasan’s Yaskin, his backstory and his purpose. “Our idea was to introduce Yaskin as a mysterious, shadowy figure. For now, we want the audience to know that Yaskin’s experiment has made him a superpower but he also created his nemesis; this sets into motion a set of events. It is a classic story of a villain creating his own nemesis,” he had said.

He had also revealed how the second film would introduce a fourth world, the ‘Flux Lands’, in addition to Kasi, Complex and Shambala.

In the first film, Prabhas’ character Bhairava, a bounty hunter in the dystopian city of Kashi, was revealed to be a reincarnation of Karna. The film starred Amitabh as Ashwatthama, while Deepika played a woman carrying a child that is believed to be the final avatar of Lord Vishnu, called Kalki. The first film also ended with a cliffhanger, with Haasan’s Yaskin becoming more powerful than before.

With cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic and music by Santhosh Narayanan, the film had editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao. Nitin Zihani Choudhary served as the production designer

The film, produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, grossed more than Rs. 1000 crores at the global box office.
