Actor and BJP MP Hema Malini addressed the Lok Sabha on Thursday, highlighting the serious issue of “deepfake” technology targeting celebrities. She emphasized that this cannot be taken lightly, as it not only damages a person’s reputation but also has a significant impact on the victim’s mental health.
The Rise of AI and Deepfake Misuse
Speaking during Zero Hour, Hema Malini highlighted the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. While acknowledging its advantages, she stressed that these technologies are often misused to target celebrities, especially those from the film industry.Hema further emphasized that celebrities invest years of hard work to build their reputation, but the misuse of deepfake technology threatens their image. She pointed out that many have fallen victim to fake videos that go viral, causing significant harm to their mental well-being. She urged that this issue must not be taken lightly.
Social Media and Misinformation
Hema Malini also highlighted the rampant misuse of social media, where celebrities’ personal lives are often subjected to harsh criticism. She noted that facts are frequently distorted to fit a particular narrative, further adding to the challenges public figures face in the digital age.
Hema Malini’s Journey from Films to Politics
Before entering politics, Hema Malini had a remarkable career in the film industry. She made her debut with the Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam in 1963 and stepped into Hindi cinema with Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968. By the 1970s, she earned the title of ‘Dream Girl’ in Bollywood.

Hema Malini starred in numerous Hindi films, with her on-screen pairings with Dharmendra being particularly successful. She married him in 1980, and they have two daughters, Esha and Ahana, both of whom pursued acting. After campaigning for the BJP since 1999, she officially joined the party in 2004.
