‘Retro’ Day 1 box office collection: ‘The ONE’ Suriya’s film opens at ₹19.25 crores in India-OxBig News Network

Retro, Tamil superstar Suriya’s latest release, minted Rs. 19.25 crores in India on its opening day, May 1. The film, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, was one of the most anticipated films of the year and was eagerly awaited by fans of the star, especially due to the debacle that his previous release Kanguva turned out to be.

This is quite a strong opening for Suriya, however, this does fall short of the opening day collections of Kanguva (Rs. 22 crores).

According to Sacnilk, Retro saw an overall occupancy of 87.25 per cent in Chennai, but Dindigul had the highest footfall, with 92.25 per cent. Interestingly, Trichy and Mumbai came second, with 90.25 per cent occupancy each.

Retro features Suriya as Paarivel Kannan, a reformed gangster who goes after his ladylove to the Andaman Islands. At the same time, his notorious past catches up in the form of his gangster father. The film, a mix of multiple genres, has garnered polarising reviews from the critics and the audiences.

While many have criticised the film, calling out its overstuffed narrative and an underwhelming second half, several others have praised Karthik’s off-beat attempt. The Hindu’s review of Retroread, “If not for that underwhelming middle stretch, Retro proves to be the kind of experiment more Tamil filmmakers need to take on.”

The film, bankrolled by Jyotika and Suriya under the banner 2D Entertainment, stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead. Joju George, Jayaram, and Nasser play pivotal roles. Karthik’s regular collaborator, Santhosh Narayanan, is the music composer for the movie. Shafique Mohamed Ali is the editor, while Shreyaas Krishna is the cinematographer. Retro is co-produced by Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian, Karthikeyan Santhanam under the banner Stone Bench Films.
