Rishab Shetty to play Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in biopic-OxBig News Network

Actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty will star as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the biopic of the Maratha warrior. Rishab announced the project with the first-look poster of the movie.

To be directed by Sandeep Singh, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will hit the screens on January 21, 2027. The first-look poster shows Rishab as the 17th century emperor.

“This is isn’t just a film, it’s a battle cry to honour a warrior who fought against all odds, challenged the might of the mighty Mughal empire, and forged a legacy that can never be forgotten,” wrote Rishab on X. The film will be the directorial debut of Sandeep Singh, who has produced well-known Hindi films such as Aligarh, Jhund, PM Narendra Modi and Swatantriya Veer Savarkar.

Rishab will also play the lead in Jai Hanuman, director Prasanth Varma’s sequel to his blockbuster Hanu-Man (2023). The movie, to be bankrolled by Mythri Movie Makers, will go on floors soon.

Rishab’s next will be Kantara: Chapter 1. A prequel to Rishab’s sensational hit Kantara (2022), the movie will release worldwide on October 2, 2025. Ajaneesh Loknath has composed the music for Kantara: Chapter 1 while Arvind Kashyap is the cinematographer.
