Robert Eggers announces next film, ‘Werwulf’-OxBig News Network

Following the success of Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers is turning his focus to another horror icon: werewolves. Eggers will helm Werwulf, a 13th-century werewolf thriller co-written with Sjón, his collaborator on The Northman. Focus Features, the studio behind Nosferatu, is once again partnering with the filmmaker for the project, which is slated for a North American release on Christmas Day, 2026.

Set in medieval England, the script reportedly incorporates dialogue true to the Old English of the time period, complete with translations and annotations to immerse audiences in its gritty setting. While Eggers originally envisioned the film in black and white, the production has since shifted to color, though it remains steeped in the filmmaker’s trademark period drama aesthetics.

Eggers and Sjón will produce the film, with Focus Features handling distribution alongside Chris and Eleanor Columbus as executive producers. The studio, known for its support of Eggers’ distinctive projects like The Lighthouse and The Witch, is banking on Werwulf to replicate the box office magic of Nosferatu, which earned $156 million globally and became Eggers’ highest-grossing film to date.
