Veteran actress Manisha Koirala has once again found herself at the centre of a heated discussion. The actress, who hails from Nepal and made a name for herself in Hindi cinema with her debut in ‘Saudagar’ (1991), has recently been the subject of renewed attention. A video of the Heeramandi actress speaking about Nepal’s past as a Hindu nation in an old interview has resurfaced online.
In the video, she was heard saying, “Nepal was very prosperous when it was a Hindu nation. That was our best identity. We were the only Hindu nation in the world. Why was it removed?” She further added, “We were a peaceful Hindu nation. Sometimes I feel it was all a conspiracy.” Koirala’s comments have ignited intense reactions on social media, with her remarks receiving both support and criticism.
One social media user commented, “Deep state and even the Islamic world never want Hindu identity to be equal to Christian identity. They are afraid when Hindus start glorifying their own past instead of just praising the West.” Another user praised her for addressing the issue, writing, “Manisha Koirala speaks the truth many hesitate to say! 🔥 Nepal thrived as the world’s only Hindu nation—its identity, peace, and prosperity all rooted in Sanatan values. Was its secular shift truly by choice or part of a larger conspiracy?”
However, not everyone agreed with Koirala’s perspective. A critic questioned, “Why is Manisha Koirala suddenly worried about Nepal being a Hindu nation? If Nepal was so rich as a Hindu country, then why did she come to India to make her career while India is a democratic and secular nation?” Another comment read, “Nepal has become stronger after becoming secular. It is now so strong that it can even stand up to India. How much more ‘prosperity’ does Nepal need?”
Some also linked Koirala’s stance to her political affiliations. One social media user reacted, “Her support for the RPP during the Nepal elections underscores her advocacy for restoring Nepal’s Hindu identity, aligning with a broader movement in the country.”
Beyond politics, Koirala also shared personal anecdotes from her early days in Bollywood. Recalling her experience during Saudagar, she revealed, “At the time of Saudagar, there was Coke mixed with vodka, and I was told by people around me not to tell anyone that I was drinking vodka because actresses were not meant to be drinking alcohol. I was told to say that I was drinking Coke.”
She recounted how her mother encouraged honesty, saying, “I told my mum, ‘I am drinking Coke,’ and she knew I had put vodka in it. She said, ‘Listen, if you are drinking vodka, say you are drinking vodka, don’t say you are drinking Coke. Don’t lie about such small things.’”
Manisha further reflected on the double standards in the film industry, noting that while male actors were praised for having multiple relationships, actresses were expected to maintain a demure image. She mentioned facing criticism for defying these norms but chose to handle it with resilience.
