National Trust cowl up tampered paintings in Derbyshire that includes JK Rowling

The National Trust has coated up a bit of artwork that includes the title of creator JK Rowling, after it was tampered with by a member of the general public.

Between April and November 2024 guests to Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire had been invited to sew names of ladies they felt ought to be celebrated on to a textile show known as Virtuous Woman.

During this time, a participant stitched over the Harry Potter creator’s title. Last week, this masking was removed by feminist campaigner Jean Hatchet.

The National Trust, who handle the property, stated: “The paintings was open to contributions for eight months and closed in November when the piece was completed and placed on public show.”

“We ask guests to not tamper with any artwork on show,” they added.

“The piece has been taken off show whereas we examine the harm brought about and think about subsequent steps.”

Rowling has additionally been approached for remark.

The best-selling creator has been criticised for her views on gender identification and for arguing trans girls shouldn’t be allowed into female-only areas.

Her feedback have drawn each assist and criticism in recent times on social media and from public figures.

Visitors of all ages contributed names to the gown, which was created by artist Layla Khoo in affiliation with University of Leeds and National Trust.

Recurring names included Rowling, civil rights activist Rosa Parks, singer Taylor Swift and the time period “mum”.

The paintings was officially put on display in November.

Ms Hatchet posted on X that she had removed “hateful stitching” and known as on the belief to “apologise to women immediately”.

In a post on X final month, the Trust stated: “Any contributions to the piece have been made by those that selected to participate.

“None of the views expressed or actions taken by members characterize the views of the National Trust, the artist or the University of Leeds.”
