Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his much-anticipated political plunge, Jana Nayagan, written and directed by H. Vinoth, is setting new benchmarks in the overseas market. The film’s international rights have been acquired for a staggering Rs 75 crore on a refundable advance basis, marking the highest-ever overseas deal for a Tamil film to date. This record-breaking deal underscores the immense buzz surrounding the project, which also stars Bobby Deol as the antagonist and Pooja Hegde as the leading lady. Vijay and Pooja were last seen together in Beast.

The first look and title of Jana Nayagan were recently revealed, instantly amplifying excitement among fans and industry stakeholders. The poster showcased Vijay in a charismatic avatar. Post-release, Vijay will shift his focus entirely to his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which was officially registered with the Election Commission of India in September 2024.
In recent years, Telugu films have dominated the overseas market, with blockbusters like the Baahubali series, RRR, Salaar, Kalki 2898 AD, and the Pushpa franchise raking in massive numbers internationally. However, Jana Nayagan could turn the tide for Tamil cinema, signaling a resurgence in global appeal.
Meanwhile, a growing concern with Telugu films has been their high acquisition costs, leaving distributors with minimal profits post-breakeven. For instance, Pushpa 2: The Rule’s breakeven point in North America was pegged at $15 million, and Game Changer’s at $4.5 million. While Pushpa managed to cross the breakeven mark, distributors saw only marginal profits, whereas Game Changer reportedly faces a loss of nearly $2 million.
Vijay’s penultimate film, The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), earned over ₹252 crore in India. With a strong global fan base and the right promotional strategy, Jana Nayagan has the potential to set new international records for Tamil cinema.
