US President Donald Trump is no stranger to controversy. This time, he came under fire for standing out – wearing blue in a sea of black – among the heads of state who had flocked to Vatican City to attend Pope Francis’s funeral mass on Saturday.
The other global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron of France, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Javier Milei of Argentina and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni were all in black as they stood together in St Peter’s Square to pay their final respects to Pope Francis.
In many cultures, black is worn at funerals as it signifies mourning and is considered respectful for such occasions. Wearing other colours can be seen as disrespectful by many.
Trump was flanked by his wife, Melania Trump, who was dressed in a black outfit.
Incidentally, the UK’s Prince William and Indian President Droupadi Murmu wore darker shades of blue, but none stood out like Trump, who wore a lighter shade of blue with a matching tie.
“Dude really wore a blue suit, not even black or navy at least, but blue. Totally embarrassing and disrespectful,” said one user, quickly latching on to the US President’s outfit controversy.
Trump’s blue suit and blue tie reportedly violated the dress code for the event. Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden sported a blue tie. However, he was wearing a black suit like the others as well.
Trump’s violation of the dress code didn’t go unnoticed, as several users expressed their shock, calling it not only “disrespectful,” but an “embarrassment” as well. “He always has to stick out and try and be the center of attention,” read another post.
