Members of the Haveri University Preservation Committee presented a memorandum on Sunday urging the State government not to close down the newly formed Haveri Univeristy, as it will benefit an educationally backward region.
In a letter to Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani, they have requested the State government to reconsider the Cabinet Sub-Committee’s decision to shut down Haveri University along with eight newly formed universities.
It is important to sustain and strengthen such nascent universities and not close them down, they said.
The decision impacts thousands of students, numerous academic and administrative staff and 42 affiliated degree colleges with their students.
The university has been operating without financial support of the State government. Rather than closing down the institution, the State government should allocate appropriate funds for its enhancement, they said.
Education should be viewed as a tool for human resource development and not as a commercial enterprise. The government should divert funds from unnecessary projects to these universities, they said.
Mr. Lamani said that he will speak to the Sub-Committee members and urge them to retain the institution.
Members Parimala Jain, Satish Kulkarni, Satish M.B., Basavaraj S., Basavaraj Pujar, Mallikarjun Hiremath, Basavaraj Hedgond and Sridhar Dodmani were present.
