The blowout began on June 12 during service operations at the site, which is operated by private contractor SK Petro Services on behalf of the ONGC. It caused gas to spew uncontrollably from the well, posing a serious safety and environmental challenge. The incident had triggered precautionary evacuations of around 350 families from the vicinity of Barichuk in Bhatiapar.
What followed was a marathon engineering effort, involving ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), global experts from Cudd Pressure Control, and dedicated local crews. The operation was aimed at safely controlling the well without triggering a fire or endangering lives.
In the early hours of Friday, the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) was delicately removed from the wellhead, and a specially prepared capping stack was mounted in its place. Once secured, the gas flow was successfully redirected and controlled, and the well was safely sealed.
While the immediate danger has been averted, the official said that technical teams will continue to assess the site and follow up with next steps under standard operational protocol.
