In a twist to a suspected road rage incident, the police on Monday (April 14) arrested 25-year-old Abhishek Shetty, a former school bus driver from Surathkal, for the alleged murder of 59-year-old Mohammed Shareef, an autorickshaw driver from Mangaluru. Shareef’s body was found in a well at Kunjathur on April 10.

According to the police, the motive was a confrontation at a traffic junction in Mangaluru, where Shetty allegedly clashed with Shareef over the right of way. According to the statement reportedly given by Shetty to the police, he believed that a group of auto drivers, allegedly led by Shareef, began deliberately blocking his bus. “He also claimed that Shareef had filed complaints about his rash driving, which got him dismissed from the school,” a police officer said.

Following this, Shetty reportedly hired Shareef’s auto on the night of April 9 and allegedly directed him to a secluded location at Kunjathur, around 36 km away. There, he reportedly stabbed Shareef in the back of the neck before dumping the body in a well.

The police said that Shetty, who had a history of drug-related offences, was likely under the influence of narcotics at the time of the alleged murder. He was tracked down after investigators scanned footage from 280 CCTV cameras.

The weapon reportedly used for the crime is yet to be recovered.
