Just hours after a ceasefire agreement was reached between India and Pakistan, fresh tensions erupted following reported violations by Pakistan, prompting strong responses from both India and China. Shortly after reports of drone sightings in Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat — flagged by J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on X — Pakistan’s Foreign Office released a statement quoting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirming Beijing’s support for Islamabad.
In a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Wang said China would continue to “stand firmly” with Pakistan in defending its “sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence.”
According to the Pakistani statement, Dar briefed Wang on the volatile regional situation and the latest exchange of fire between India and Pakistan following the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Wang reportedly appreciated Pakistan’s “restraint” and its “responsible approach under challenging circumstances.”
“China, as Pakistan’s All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partner and iron-clad friend, will continue to support Pakistan,” the statement quoted Wang as saying.
Dar also spoke to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and updated him on the regional developments.
In response to the ceasefire violations, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a sharp statement accusing Pakistan of breaching the understanding reached earlier that day between the two countries’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).
“For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations… This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today,” the MEA said. It added that Indian armed forces are responding “adequately and appropriately” and have been instructed to remain on high alert.
The MEA called on Pakistan to act responsibly and stop the violations, warning that India would deal strongly with any future incidents along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC).
