Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi suspended 38-year-old Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of Veppur after he was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials for demanding and taking a bribe of ₹10,000 for patta name change a few days ago.
DVAC sources said the arrested VAO V. Gopinath had been working in the village for nearly a year. Initial inquiry revealed that complainant S. Nizamuddin, 40, a resident in Gudiyatham, met VAO at his office a few weeks ago for change in the patta.
DVAC sources said the VAO initially demanded a sum of ₹15,000. Then he reduced the bribe money to ₹10,000.
Following this, Mr. Nizamuddin lodged a complaint with the DVAC. A seven-member team led by S. Mythili, Inspector, DVAC (Vellore), laid a trap and caught Gopinath red-handed. A case has been registered against him. Later, the VAO was arrested and lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
