Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who accompanied his sister and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi to Kerala after her maiden electoral victory, on Saturday urged the Congress party and the United Democratic Front (UDF) to pressure the state government to assist the victims of the Wayanad landslides.
Speaking at a joint public meeting with Priyanka at Mukkam, Rahul began by paying tribute to the landslide victims. He assured the people his party and the UDF stood in solidarity with those who had lost family members, homes and property in the disaster.
“Unfortunately, we are not in government, so we cannot do what a government can,” Rahul said. “However, I told my sister and (AICC General Secretary) KC Venugopal that every Congress and UDF member should put pressure on Kerala Government to help the victims of the landslides.”
Rahul also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of discriminating against the people of Wayanad, alleging Modi had refused to provide them with the support they needed and deserved.
Rahul further criticised the Prime Minister for allegedly treating industrialist Gautam Adani differently than the common people, despite the Constitution mandating equality for all. “PM Modi says it does not matter if Adani has been indicted in the US and called a criminal there; in India, we will not indict him,” Rahul claimed.
