The Congress sharply reacted to the claims made by the BJP government about peace in Manipur and J&K, saying that the figures shared by the Centre are meant to divert attention from its own colossal failures.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), questioned the credibility of the Home Ministry’s claims, especially in light of recent terror attacks in Kashmir. He pointed out that those responsible for the April 22, 2025, terrorist attack in Pahalgam — in which 26 civilians were killed — remain unpunished.
“According to some reports that have not been denied, these very terrorists were also involved in the December 2023 attack in Poonch and the October 2024 attacks in Gagangir and Gulmarg,” Ramesh wrote, suggesting that the perpetrators have been able to operate with impunity across multiple high-profile incidents.
The Congress leader also took strong exception to the Home Minister’s assessment of the situation in Manipur, asserting that the northeastern state is still reeling from unrest and that the delayed imposition of President’s Rule has been ineffective. “Manipur continues to burn. Law and order is in a perilous condition,” he said.
He said the people of Manipur are suffering under the weight of unaddressed violence, insecurity, and the daily disruption of their livelihoods. The Congress leader did not hold back in his criticism, accusing the Home Minister of boasting without delivering results.
“Never has India had a Union Home Minister whose tenure has been one of maximum boasts, minimum achievements — unless what he has been able to do for his son can count for that,” Ramesh remarked, in a veiled reference to allegations often raised by the Opposition regarding perceived nepotism.
Ramesh’s remarks come amid the Centre’s repeated assertions of restoring peace and stability in Kashmir, bolstered by statistics showing an over 80 per cent decline in civilian deaths from terror-related incidents between 2014 and 2024.
The Home Ministry has also claimed a revival of normalcy through increased voter turnout, record tourism, and a crackdown on terrorism sympathisers.
