In a first-of-its-kind initiative to move perishable produce outdoors Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu railway division has gotten its first VP indent (a request for the allocation of a full parcel van for the cargo of products) registered from Katra railway station to Bandra (Mumbai) for June 3, a senior railway official stated on Saturday (May 24, 2025).
The effort, undertaken after intensive consultations with the Horticulture Department and fruit grower associations, is a welcome initiative if goes off efficiently as it can offload the highway site visitors burden and can allow perishable items like cherries attain its supposed markets with minimal harm or deterioration in high quality, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), Northern Railway, Jammu, Uchit Singhal stated.
He stated a 24 tons of cargo can be moved in a VP hooked up to a items practice from Katra station to Bandra station in Mumbai. The cargo will attain its vacation spot in 30 hours.
“It will be a win-win situation for both railways and fruit growers and in turn the economy of J&K region,” Mr. Singhal stated.
