NEW DELHI: The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), which is the voice for cooperatives across the world, conferred the 2024 Rochdale Pioneers Award to US Awasthi, managing director and chief executive officer of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), for his contribution in growth and development of cooperatives in India.
Awasthi, who joined IFFCO in 1993 as the chief executive officer, expressed happiness on the recognition and posted on X: “I am glad and overwhelmed with this historic moment in the history of cooperatives and IFFCO that today I am bestowed with the prestigious ROCHDALE PIONEERS AWARD by International Cooperative Alliance @icacoop for my contribution in growth & development of cooperatives in India and promoting the ethos of IFFCO & Indian Cooperative model across the world. My heartfelt thank to everyone for supporting me in my work.”
The ICA established the Rochdale Pioneers Award in 2000. The purpose of this award is to recognise a person or, under special circumstances, a cooperative organisation, having contributed to innovative and financially sustainable cooperative activities that have significantly benefited their membership.
The recipient of the first Rochdale Pioneers Award was Dr Verghese Kurian from India. Eminent faces of cooperative field such as Francisco Luis Jimenez Arcila of Colombia, Lloyd Wilkinson from UK, Roberto Rodrigues, Howard Brodsky, and Byeong-won Kim among others have been awarded with the prestigious Rochdale Pioneers Award.
Earlier this month, India hosted the ICA Global Cooperative Conference and the ICA General Assembly for the first time in the 130-year-long history of the ICA.
At the conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the need to create global financial institutions which could finance co-operatives across the world. He lauded the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) for its huge role and said: “We will have to think of a Collaborative Financial Model to ensure easy and transparent financing for cooperatives. He underlined the importance of pooling financial resources to support small and financially weak co-operatives. Such shared financial platforms can play an essential role in funding large projects and providing loans to co-operatives. He further highlighted the potential of co-operatives in enhancing the supply chain by actively participating in procurement, production and distribution processes.”
The ICA, which was founded in 1895 as a non-profit international association to advance the cooperative social enterprise model, represents more than 308 cooperative federations and organisations across 106 countries. It works with global and regional governments and organisations to create the legislative environments that allow cooperatives to form and grow. The largest 300 cooperatives in the world have combined annual revenues of $ 2.4 trillion (2021) and 300 million people around the world (10% of the employed population) secure their livelihoods in cooperatives, either through direct employment or by organising through a cooperative.
